After recently being diagnosed with breast cancer, the talk show host Giuliana Rancic has decided to undergo a double mastectomy. Unfortunately, several attempts to fight the cancer with a lumpectomy have failed, leaving her to choose bilateral mastectomies as a treatment. Being diagnosed with breast cancer is not easy for any woman. Especially being a widely known talk show host, we can only assume that it must be difficult for her to keep strong in front of the camera. Her decision to undergo a double mastectomy was most likely due to numerous reasons.
When Mrs. Rancic was diagnosed with breast cancer, she was undergoing several fertility treatments. As a young 37 year-old woman, she had two very significant risk factors for developing breast cancer; a family history of breast cancer and an absence or delay of childbirth. Along with this, additional future attempts at lumpectomy are likely to cause deformities of the breast, which are common among thinner women like Giuliana Rancic.
One of the biggest reasons why she chose a double mastectomy was due to the fact that a mastectomy does lower the risk of recurrence, while a lumpectomy with radiation does not have much of a guarantee. Like most women, we can only assume that she would rather get rid of the likelihood of getting breast cancer again in the future. Additionally, various treatments of lumpectomy and radiation will make the breast look worse over time, creating asymmetry of the breasts.
Many studies show that most women diagnosed with breast cancer choose a mastectomy over a lumpectomy and radiation. Getting a mastectomy is typically the preferred choice among all options. After a mastectomy, reconstructive surgery is available as a second step to most women. Many women want to look normal and have normal breasts, so they start considering breast implants. For a woman like Giuliana Rancic, getting breast implants may be a great choice. This procedure has the ability to make them feel beautiful and confident again, after undergoing the difficult journey of being diagnosed with breast cancer. Most of them take this opportunity to either make their breasts bigger than they were before their mastectomy or the same size. For many brave women, like Giuliana Rancic, breast implants are a great way to start over.
Regardless of her reasons for undergoing a double mastectomy, Giuliana Rancic chose the best option for her and will most likely undergo reconstructive surgery as well.
