A leading South Florida cosmetic and plastic surgery center, warns of the dangers of getting gluteal implants because of the high risk of infection associated with the procedure. A gluteal lift is an operation that involves inserting a silicone implant beneath the gluteus maximus; also known as the butt muscle. The most common incision used to insert a butt implant is done in the gluteal cleft. This cleft area is located near the anus, which is a breeding ground for bacteria. Thus, the risk of infection is higher for this procedure than any other type of cosmetic surgery. There is an option to put the incision in a different location, but that would make the scars very visible.
A study published in The American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery in 2012, showed that 11% more patients experienced infection with gluteal implants than those who had fat injections. Doctors from the Department of Surgery at the Presence Health Saint Joseph Hospital in Chicago, also stated interesting information. The intramuscular technique is the most popular among plastic surgeons who perform gluteal implants and a complication rate of up to 30% has occurred in some studies; infection being one of these complications. An infection will usually begin about a week following the surgery. To avoid serious health complications, the implant will have to be removed immediately and the process to cure the infection needs to begin. The patient will have to wait several months and get clearance from the doctor that the infection is gone before a new implant can be inserted. In addition to infections, other complications include implant displacement, fluid buildup, and capsular contraction. For this reason, surgeons recommend the safer Brazilian Butt Lift. Though there will always be risks associated with any surgery, this surgery is less invasive and reduces the chance of infection. During this procedure, a surgeon will remove fat from different areas of the body and inject it into the buttocks. This is called fat grafting and usually produces better results than implants and it looks more natural. In the event that someone is very thin and does not have enough fat to relocate in the body, it's important that patient discuss alternatives with their doctor. Having a fuller more round derriere is seen, especially in today's society, as highly desirable and the demand continues to increase. For this reason, plastic surgeons are constantly looking for new ways to make surgery as safe as possible. It's important that anyone considering a butt augmentation or any other form of plastic surgery, speaks to a board certified doctor.
